Say hello to JUNO!

In 2026, I won a JUNO award for Classical Album of the Year (Large Ensemble). I was invited by Axios Men’s Ensemble and Pro Coro Canada to add my voice to the stirring Ukrainian War Requiem, penned by Benedict Sheehan.

One of the thrills of my career was stepping in mid-performance as one of the principals for Mendelssohn’s Elijah with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra in March 2019.

I am a huge fan of Tony award-winning Lea Salonga, who originated the role of Kim in the musical Miss Saigon, and is the singing voice for Disney’s Mulan and Jasmine. I’m thrilled to have been able to meet her when she performed in Calgary in April 2019.

Another of my happy places, singiing opera. Here I am, just an average Giuseppe who loves to sing, in a production of Verdi’s La traviata with Calgary Opera, with Talise Trevigne as Violetta (April 2021).

I was thrilled to have a small role in the April 2021 Calgary Opera production of Verdi’s smash hit La traviata, in which I interacted with all three principal characters.

May 2026: I was a featured singer for the City of Calgary’s Celebration for the Arts. It was nice to collaborate with my dear friend Jonathan Love, with whom I’ve head the pleasure of collaborating since we were both members of the Calgary Boys’ Choir.

I love me some Handel’s Messiah. Grateful to Early Music Voices for having me sing arias at a number of their productions.

The works of JS Bach are among my most favourite to perform. I performed the Evangelist for Bach’s Weihnachts Oratorium (Christmas Oratorio) with Foothills Philharmonic Society in December 2023.

In addition to classic works, I enjoy the challenges and rewards of singing contemporary works. I was happy to lend my voice to the Alberta premiere of the oratorio Cain by Canadian composer Alexis Contant.

One of my favourite works to perform is Mozart’s Requiem. Thankful to Da Camera Singers (Edmonton) for affording me my first opportunity to sing this work as tenor soloist (November 2019).

Graduate studies at the University of Alberta reawakened my love of opera. In March 2017, I performed the lead role for Britten’s Albert Herring.

My operatic debut as a tenor was in March 2018, for an innovative and unforgettable production of Verdi’s La traviata, in a most unusual venue in Edmonton, Canada. Huge thanks to Darcia Parada of Mercury Opera for casting me as Gastone — I even got to use my skills as a blackjack dealer!

In September 2018, I reprised my role as Gastone in Verdi’s La traviata with Calgary Concert Opera Company, with whom I continue to collaborate today.

Mezzo soprano Barbara King, co-founder of Calgary Concert Opera, is someone with whom I love to collaborate. I am so thankful to her for the abundance of opportunity she and her husband Chris Gieck have afforded me to perform.

One of my favourite performances with Calgary Concert Opera was portraying the lecherous Abbé de Chazeuil in Cilea’s Adriana Lecouvreur (September 2023).

Through Calgary Concert Opera, I’ve collaborated with so many talented local artists. Here I am singing the role of Le Remendado from Bizet’s Carmen in his famed quintet.

Calgary Concert Opera has afforded me the opportunity to not only sing but also conduct. In September 2024, I was on the podium for Verdi’s Nabucco.

Through Calgary Concert Opera, I met Bill Shookhoff of Toronto-based Opera by Request, who has been kind enough to bring me out to Toronto for a few productions. My Toronto debut was an April 2024 production of Leoš Janáček’s Věc Makropulos (which also marked my debut of singing in Czech). I returned in November 2025 for a production of Richard Strauss’ Salome for which I performed the roles of Narraboth (the lovesick head of the Roman guard) and one of five Jewish clerics (that sing a fantastic and challenging quintet).

My first production with Calgary Opera was a 1986 production of Puccini’s La boheme. I did three productions as a treble singer but stopped when my voice changed. My return to operatic singing has been a lot of fun, due in large part to the ability to sing under the baton of Maestro Jonathan Brandani, the artistic director of Calgary Opera, who has made singing incredible fun and fulfilling.

Singing with the Calgary Opera Chorus since 2018 has been really rewarding. Such incredible music, talented colleagues, and inspirational artists. This was from the April 2019 production of Verdi’s Rigoletto, starring Canadian baritone Gregory Dahl.

Bizet’s Carmen is perhaps the most performed opera in the world, and yet it took me until November 2022 - when Calgary Opera celebrated its 50th anniversary - that I finally had a chance to perform in it. I loved performing alongside the likes of Rihab Chaieb, David Pomeroy, Nmon Ford and Tracy Cantin — incredible talents and inspirations!

To share any stage with world-renowned tenor David Pomeroy is a real gift. So far, four stages and counting!

The February 2020 production of Bellini’s Norma is one of my favourites. In addition to a challenging score and the need to be incredible emotional, I got to share a stage with Aviva Fortunata, Andrew Haji, Annie Rosen and Alain Coulombe.

The November 2024 Calgary Opera production of Mozart’s Don Giovanni was a lot of fun, despite not having too much to sing. I’m glad to have had some dancing, though!
